7 Questions With Canadian Artist Jessica Gowling….And A Giveaway!
I met Canadian artist and printmaker Jessica Gowling last December at the One Of A Kind Show. I was immediately captivated by her etching of two wolves who seemed to stare right through me. Being a nature lover, I was drawn to Jessica’s subjects which often consist of birds, bears, deers, hooves, and of course, wolves. Besides drawings, etchings and prints, Jessica also creates stationery, printed Moleskin journals (luuuurve!), stickers and magnets which make great gifts. She just relaunched her Etsy store, Natures My Friend, with lots of new goodies, and you’ll get 10% if you use the code abeautifullife at checkout (valid for 30 days from June 20).
NATURE’S MY FRIEND ART PRIZE PACK GIVEAWAY: Jessica being the sweetheart that she is has also sent the below art prize package with a print, postcard and buttons for a lucky reader. And now, my 7 questions for Jessica to find out what makes her get up in the mornings, whether she’s a coffee or tea person, and her love of nature.
Below: WINTER IS COMING..hehe might explain my obsession with wolves. In all seriousness, the found Bear Mirror below would be a pretty kickass thing to have on camping trips.
Jessica: I have lived in British Columbia for over 3 years now and have grown up spending summers and holidays at my family’s cabin in Windermere. I’ve always had an affinity with nature: trees, mountains, lakes and of course animals. City life (although filled with culture and incredible restaurants) doesn’t offer me much for inspiration in my practice. The wild open landscape and the creatures who call it home are what I capture in my work; it would feel disconnected if I lived in the city and was trying to do animal portraiture every day.
A Beautiful Life: What are you inspired by right now?
Jessica: Countless numbers of birds and beasts, the colours green, purple and pale blue, and the notions of simplicity, happiness and change.
A Beautiful Life: Coffee or Tea?
Jessica: Tea. I never liked it much when I was younger but I’m making up for lost cups now: white, green and fruit teas are always a welcome treat and offer a wonderful, although short, time for contemplation.
A Beautiful Life: What are 3 things you can’t live without?
Jessica: Love, family and laughter… not trying to be cheesy but it’s true, these are the most important things in life.
A Beautiful Life: If you came back to this world as an animal, what would you be?
Jessica: That’s an impossible question, like a “what’s your favorite book or song”… Here I am contemplating “Should I be an eagle and soar next to the mountains and fly over the water? Should I be a furry grizzly bear eating fresh salmon and berries then sleep through the cold bitter months? Should I be a slick red fox pouncing on little field mice and dashing through woods with my gorgeous tail weaving between trees? Should I be an owl with strong soft wings and tickle the tree tops as I fly? Should I be a kitty cat mewing soft purrs while getting a nice pet on a friendly lap? Should I be a wild wolf howling in the night and wandering with my family?” …Please don’t make me choose!
